Help Oakey

Help for Oakey!

This is Okee! When she was found, she was skinny, covered in filth, ticks, fleas, and mud. She was sad, shaking & pregnant! Not to mention, she was at a dumpster, with cars flying by her. Not giving a glace at this sweet girl, begging for a chance.

Retriever - American Staffordshire Terrier Mix

HI everyone...These are 2 beautiful boys that live next door to my Dad. As we have all heard so many times lately, the owner’s business has gone under and they are being forced to sell their house. They are trying to place their dogs in a good home, as they are not sure what their next housing situation will be. (unfortunately, I can also say these guys were the absolute best neighbors my 83 year old father ever had)They are extremely well-cared for, loved and possibly spoiled! I know the guys are just heart-broken and do not want to take them to the shelter. (Local shelter is not the best) Could you possibly send these out to your address books or any contacts you have that may be able to place them or offer some advice? I know times are tough for everyone right now, but I would appreciate anything anyone can do. They would prefer to keep them together, but would separate if necessary. Thanks so much!

Camael & Ariel

Angel Ridge Animal Rescue - Helping Horses!!

Camael

Angel Ridge Animal Rescue - Helping Horses and Animals in Need!
Ariel

Draft horses Camael and Ariel came to us in December. They had been
seized from an abuser in August and had been in a foster barn. Camael was starved and was more than 500 pounds underweight when she was rescued.

Ariel had sustained a severe leg injury which was never treated. The result was severe damage to her right rear leg which caused it to expand to six times the size of the left leg.

These horses came to use well cared for in foster care, but frightened and with major veterinary issues that needed to be addressed. We named them Camael and Ariel after the angels for Nature and Joy, and asked these angels for help in their healing. We learned that Camael has cancerous tumors in both eyes. Aggressive and flesh eating malignant tumors had devoured most of her inner, lower eyelids. She might lose her eyes, but worse yet, she could lose her life. The tumors could easily spread to the bones around the eyes or the lymph nodes.

Camael, our sweet “Cami,” needed surgery right away. In late January, we transported Cami to Ohio State University. This gentle giant, our 1800 lb.. angel, was patient and grateful in spite of the painful surgery. She is recovering in our barn and she will undergo chemotherapy. She has had the very best veterinary care. Dr. Jeff Bissett, our equine veterinarian, should be commended for his dedication and competence. Ariel’s treatment for her enlarged leg has been a diffi cult one. Dr. Bissett recommended a lasik and steroid protocol as a first step, but more measures are needed, such as methods of hydrotherapy.

Ariel’s leg will never be a normal size. It is amazing how beautifully she can walk and run with her handicapped leg. Her skin is stretched so incredibly on the leg however, that even a small cut can trigger a life-threatening infection. We must do our best to make this leg smaller.

At Angel Ridge Animal Rescue, these babies are safe, loved, and have gotten the best care in the world. We pray that they can be adopted to loving homes one day, but they have no more worries... because they will always have a home with us. A special fund has been established to pay the veterinary bills for Camael and Ariel.

God “Winks” at Two Blind Pups...
And They are Saved

They called him Woody Hayes after the famous Ohio State coach. This blind ten week old lab pup was pulled from an Ohio shelter where he was scheduled for euthanasia. A home in Ohio did not work out and we were asked to take him. Woody Hayes came to us just a few days before Christmas. Except for his sightless eyes, he was a perfectly formed purebred Labrador Retriever. Like his name sake, Woody was not afraid of facing new challenges and situations. He was so fearless, in fact, that we questioned whether he was truly sightless. A visit to an ophthalmologist veterinarian confi rmed his complete blindness. His retinas were detached, a birth defect, but a referral was made to an ophthalmologist in Virginia who could possibly reattach them and restore his sight. A sponsor offered to pay for the surgery. Unfortunately, after his surgery commenced, the veterinarian found a complication with his retinas that made the successful reattachment impossible.

Board members Paul and Lisa Neil, his father and daughter
foster team, were disappointed, but confident that renamed pup, Morgan, would live a very happy life. They are already the guardians of
blind dog Ruff, two-legged dog Gomer and other once abused dogs.
Reesie was found with his litter mate under a trailer in a mobile home
park in North Carolina. The search for the pups came about after their
nursing chocolate Lab mom was found tied nearby. Mom and pups were
doing reasonably well until the mother dog was hit by a car and killed.
The pups were only two weeks old and could not eat on their own.
Ten of the eleven pups were healthy and appeared to be normal. They
were quickly placed with foster guardians. One pup was not normal.
His eyes were malformed and he appeared to be blind. A kind woman came forward to help the pup, named Reesie by his rescuers. She loved Reesie, but did not fully understand his needs. Two week old Reesie needed replacement formula and an environment of warm temperature. Reesie’s foster mom made a sling so that Reesie could lie close to her heart as she went about her daily chores, but she tried to feed him food for a pup much older. Reesie was losing weight rapidly because he was not being fed properly. She became frustrated and thought that it would be kinder if he was put to sleep.

Three times, the foster mom took Reesie to the vet to be euthanized.
Two times, she simply could not go through with it. The third time
that she went was a charmed moment for this pup. Brenda was
waiting for her cat to be seen by the vet and overheard the conversation.
She offered to take the pup. Brenda’s step-sister, Debbie, is an animal rescuer in State College, PA and she knew that Debbie could fifi nd help for Reesie. “I saw this pup and God winked at me,” she told us. Reesie was saved, fostered by Brenda, and step-sister Debbie e-mailed his story to rescues all over the country. Angel Ridge responded and Debbie and Brenda were ecstatic. Our background in working with blind dogs made us the very best choice for Reesie. Something else about us was also especially appealing. Brenda had lived in Washington, PA for several years and worked at the Observer Reporter newspaper. “I feel like he’s going home, “she said. Reesie is being fostered by a member of the Neil family. The ophthalmologist vet thinks that some sight might be possible in his right eye. Reesie needs further tests, but if surgery is a possibility, he will have it done, thanks to a loving sponsor.

At Angel Ridge, we know that blindness in a pet does not mean an
unhappy and diffi cult life. In fact, dogs who are blind from birth
are truly fearless, like pup Woody Hayes. But always, though, the
ability to see makes life so very wonderful. Reesie and Morgan were two pups who almost died because of their handicap. God did truly “wink” at them and they were saved. May God bless our incredible volunteers, sponsors and fellow rescuers who allow us to do His work.

Helping Cats in Many Places

Angel Ridge Helping Cats in Need!!

At Angel Ridge Animal Rescue, we do not have the traditional buildings found at many shelters. These types of structures are needed for the sheltering of cats and kittens. We are able to provide shelter and sanctuary to approximately 16 cats and kittens. We believe that we are fulfi lling our mission to help cats and kittens through our program of gathering donations of cat food and litter and donating them to feline caregivers and rescuers in the greatest need. Currently, we are providing food and litter on a weekly basis to an elderly couple who help 300 cats on their acreage, and a rescuer confined to a wheelchair who cares for over 70 cats. We also provide food and litter to an elderly gentleman who cares for over 40 cats in a small building on his property, and we provide food regularly to the large colony of cats who live at the Washington Fairgrounds.

Angel Ridge Animal Rescue is also assisting in the placement of about 40 cats that were being cared for by a Washington, PA woman who passed away. To learn more and see pictures of many of them who are available for adoption click here for more information.
